On A Personal Note...
So here’s where it all began for me, my very first project, the playhouse….
Christmas, aged 3, I was given my little home along with a plastic tea-set for entertaining. There was no furniture to speak of, but a collection of rugs and blankets and cushions and little curtains at the windows. I can still remember the lovely safe, cosy feeling, snuggled up inside in my own space and the hours I spent arranging tea parties for friends, be they real, doll, cat or completely imaginary.
That feeling has never left me and I think that's its a great example of Hygge. Creating a space that's comfortable, personal and allows you to enjoy being alone or entertaining is woven into the essence of the designs we create here and the items we chose to stock for you. We embrace texture, form, colour and pattern in fabrics and home-wares designed by both up and coming, and established British and Scandinavian designers carefully curated to give lasting pleasure.
I worked in The City before I had my 3 boys but decided I needed more time to focus on them so left to be a full time mum for a while. We moved house a couple of times and I was project managing renovations. When my youngest started nursery I enrolled at Art College and did a Foundation year and a professional photography diploma.
When we moved to York to be closer to our ageing parents I left all my photography contacts behind. I was travelling a lot to support my partner's business and had the benefit of time to explore some amazing buildings, be they heritage sites, hotels or cityscapes and could build up a portfolio of inspiring images.
We spent 9 months living in Downtown Manhattan in a beautifully curated loft-style apartment belonging to two designers, which was such an amazing contrast to our English Victorian family town house. When time allowed I took on two major renovation projects drawing on some of the things I had seen and experienced followed by further redevelopments for myself.
When I was first asked to take on work by someone else I was really apprehensive despite all the experience I had. However the job went well and buoyed by the success I decided to take things further. I enrolled on a Diploma course at the world renown KLC Design School in London in order to add to my skill set and design practice and have worked since for Property Developers and Private Clients. Images from some of these jobs can be found in the Interior Design Gallery on this web site.
HyggeShack Interior Design
I have been offering my design service as HyggeShack for the past 2 years. I offer a full design service including spatial planning, lighting, kitchen and bathroom layouts, fittings and finishes, curtains and blinds and furnishing and dressing. I regularly source items for clients and like to be able to offer well made, design-led pieces that will last and give ongoing pleasure. This research has allowed me to meet designers and producers who do not have much representation in the North of England, both in the UK and Scandinavia and I wanted to be able to bring these to the market here, hence the new website.
We are opening the doors to our new Showroom at 122 Micklegate, York on Friday 26th October where clients will be able to see and buy all the items featured on the website and also our extensive range of samples. Its also a meeting space to discuss schemes with clients and host relevant events.
I am joined by India Smith, my design assistant, who will be available instore too. India has a background in Theatre set design and so brings a wonderfully creative approach to interiors. We aim to give great service to clients no matter what the size of the project.
